1) Electric table saw.

Since the DIY solar panel is made from wood, an electric table saw will come in very handy. You can use a regular hand saw if you like.

As long as you can cut the wood into specified length, it is good enough.

2) Battery operated drill.

The powered drill is great for creating pilot holes for the screws. It is especially useful when you are drilling holes on the Plexiglas.

If you push a regular screw onto the plastic, there is a high chance it will crack.

The electric drill is also useful to drive in the screws.

Make sure you have all the required drill bits and extra backup battery packs.

3) Electric sander.

You will need this tool to sand down the wood surface. If you don’t have a powered sander, the same process can be done with a piece of sand paper.

It will take a longer time because you have to sand the wood manually.

4) Caulk gun and gloves.

When building the homemade solar panel, you will be using a lot of liquid silicone caulk.

You will need a caulk gun to squeeze the caulk out of the tube.

The gloves are useful to keep your fingers off the caulk.

5) Multi-meter.

This is a very important piece of equipment when you are working with the solar cells.

Make sure the multi-meter can measure both volt and amps.

Analog or digital multi-meter will work just fine.

6) Soldering gun.

When you need to connect all the solar cells together, you will need a soldering gun.

Use a low wattage soldering gun.

The Photovoltaic cells are very fragile and you don’t want to burn off the tabs.

7) Stainless steel screws.

Get a bunch of stainless steel screws ready. You want it to be stainless steel so it wouldn’t rust when exposed to rain, snow and sun.

A good way to make sure the screws are stainless steel is to use a magnet. Push the magnets next to the screws. If they are attracted to the magnet, the screws are not stainless steel.

If there’s no attraction to the magnet, you know they are stainless steel.
